Lux Art Project

Dear Parents,

We are looking forward to the Lux Art Institute Valise Project that will take place in our classrooms.

They will be presenting Animal Tales<http://luxartinstitute.org/Education/The-Valise-Project/Valises/Animal-Tales> by Jean Lowe and doing a bookmaking project.

Here is the schedule:

Thursday, December 15 – Animal Tales valise presentation + bookmaking project (painting backgrounds)
Friday, December 16 – Bookmaking project (painting details)

8:05 – 9:05 am          Mr. Hodgson Room 14

9:15 –10:15 am         Mrs. Voaklander Room 8

10:30 – 11:30 am      Mrs. Ebert    Room 13

For the project we will be doing a bookmaking project that uses acrylic paint. Please have your children wear or bring an old shirt as this paint will stain clothing. We encourage students to bring in a favorite book to use as inspiration for their project. Please have students bring in their book by next Thursday.

All parents are welcome to observe and/or help out with the project.

Thank you,

The Third Grade Team

Third grade will be going on a field trip to Mira Costa College on Friday, November 18th. We will be traveling by bus, and lunch will be provided. Please make sure you get the Permission Slips returned to class by Tuesday, November 15th. Thanks!

Students will start brining home their nonfiction books to read this week. Please make sure they are reading their nonfiction book every night. Review the directions for the book report with your child to make sure they understand what is expected of them. Make sure they work on their report a little each day to ensure it is finished by the due date. Have fun with it!

Homework and Newsletters

Thank you for taking the time to visit us on Back to School night! We are excited about the wonderful year ahead we will be sharing with you and your children.

Dear Families,

The students had a great start to the year. We have been doing many “Getting to know you” activities. For the next two weeks we will be assessing students in Language Arts and Math.

This week we are starting our first language arts theme, “Off to Adventure”. Our first story is Lost and Found. Skills we will work on are: identifying complete sentences, abc order, and spelling with the short vowel sounds i, e, and a. They will have their spelling test this Friday. The third grade team uses sentences to assess students on new words, “No Excuse Words”, and punctuation. Please study the whole sentence.

In math we have started a place value unit. We will be working with numbers up to 99,999.  Our first Social Studies unit is on Patriotic Symbols, such as the Statue of Liberty, the bald eagle, and the Capitol Building. We will also introduce them to the three branches of government.

Sincerely,

The Third Grade Team

Dear Families,

Welcome to Third Grade! We are excited about the new year starting. Our third grade team will be working together to give your child an enriching and challenging year. The Third Grade teachers write and prepare this newsletter together. All third grade homework is the same unless noted in the comment section. News concerning individual classrooms can also be found in this section.

Each week your child will bring home a homework packet on Monday, which will be due on Friday. There is no school this Friday so homework will be due on Thursday for this week. For homework this week your child will be doing a “getting to know you activity” (the hand), and studying the list of “No Excuse

Words” for a test on Thursday. This is a list of words the students are expected to know and use correctly in their everyday writing. Please keep the “No Excuse Words” list at home for review and practice. Besides this work, Third Grade students are required to read for at least 20 minutes every night.

This week there is also homework for you! We would greatly appreciate it if you could fill out the Parent Questionnaire to return on Thursday with your child’s homework, please J!

Sincerely,

The Third Grade Teachers
